Raghava Lawrence made his intention to run for political office in Tamil Nadu known on Friday after resisting joining the system for many years and causing many people to think about who might be running for the now vacant seat of Trichy East. It is now open after Chief Minister and long-time friend of Lawrence, Vijay, gave the seat back to the voters by resigning from that position. Lawrence wrote on his social media account on the platform X that he was finally going into politics due to circumstances he didn’t foresee before this time; he never thought he could do both due to his focus on film and charitable works. Lawrence was never involved in the political game but became close friends with someone who was and something to think about for him if he ever wanted to explore any political aspirations.
There are many media reports connection him with the Trichy East seat after Vijay gave the seat back; Vijay ran for both Trichy East and Perambur, and won both with a large margin; but due to the TN electoral rules only allowed to hold one constituency at a time he decided to stay with Perambur in May 2023.
He ultimately retained Perambur, citing its proximity to the State Secretariat, leaving Trichy East vacant and triggering intense speculation about potential successors. Lawrence mentioned that he did not want to become involved in Vijay politics for any personal gain or career ambition; however, he framed his announcement as a logical follow-up to his dedication to serving the community and to building a better society with government. His main reason for getting involved in politics has always been to work with people that he believes can help him to create a society, by working with other trusted individuals to produce social change that will benefit a larger number of people than what could be accomplished by the efforts of individuals alone.
Lawrence produced an 18-minute video in which he explains in detail the path that led him to make this decision and the philosophical reasoning behind his desire to become involved in politics. In the video, Lawrence shared the fact that he had repeatedly asked his mother for her permission over the years to become involved in politics, and had always been told "no."
When Lawrence's friend, Vijay, recently won a historic political position, it apparently changed his mother's opinion about Lawrence becoming involved in politics, and she now supports her son's dreams of becoming a politician. In addition to how his introduction to politics has been impacted by his mother's opinion, Lawrence acknowledged the emotional impact of Rajinikanth's decision to stay out of politics on him, and expressed his disappointment in Rajinikanth's decision. This background helps to illustrate that his entry to politics is not about personal ambition, but it is about fulfilling a long-held belief that he should be involved in politics to support the community and to create change through government.
