inDrive's electric vehicle expansion aims to reduce driver-operating costs by thirty percent while advancing regional mobility sustainability.
inDrive, a ride hailing company, plans to ramp up its expansion of electric vehicles or electric vehicle taxis (e-taxis) in Metro Manila from the second half of 2026. inDrive's entry into the Philippines represents a significant disruption within Southeast Asia's automotive and transportation industries as they have already successfully initiated pilot programs for EVs in several other Asian countries.
According to Sofia Guinto, inDrive’s country manager for the Philippines, the rollout is part of a strategic effort to offer drivers access to more economical transportation options. EVs have been shown to have lower operating costs than conventional petrol vehicles (up to 30% less) - which is especially important given the current increase in fuel prices. This cost savings will lead to an increase in the income potential of the platform's driver base.
inDrive is currently testing e-taxis in Baguio City to assess how well e-vehicles can withstand the conditions created by the tough terrain of the area. The results of these tests will help to inform inDrive’s overall plan to launch up to 1,000 EVs in the Philippines in 2023. The Philippines will become the fifth country in Asia where inDrive has introduced its Electric Vehicle Program, following India, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Thailand.
To assist drivers with their earnings further, inDrive is increasing the availability of its Purple Zone incentive programme by providing additional compensation for drivers who accept rides until 1 a.m. in high-demand areas. inDrive has also launched aggressive commission cuts, which will reduce commissions as low as 1% for drivers who accept rides in busy areas (referred to as high-traffic zones).
Outside of these high-traffic zone areas, inDrive will continue to charge a standard commission of 10%, making inDrive the lowest-priced alternative to other ride-hailing services. The company is working to develop a network/infrastructure of EVs with manufacturers, taxi companies and ride-hailing services to support and improve the scalability of the e-vehicle network.
Business Honor is of the view that inDrive's electric vehicle expansion represents a strategic shift in Metro Manila's ride-hailing operational sustainability and driver cost competitiveness.
