Humanitarian Aid Efforts Expand Support for Nigeria’s Displaced Communities

The European Union and international partners have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening humanitarian aid and long-term solutions for internally displaced persons across northern Nigeria.

Further international attempts to ensure the improvement of humanitarian aid for internally displaced people (IDPs) were made as the representatives of the European Union and its partners in development emphasized their readiness to continue providing help to vulnerable communities residing in multiple states. The purpose of the program is to ensure that IDPs receive emergency aid and receive social and economic assistance for achieving integration.

At the steering committee meeting in Abuja, the representatives of the European Union, IOM, UNHCR, UN-Habitat, and the Danish Refugee Council assessed the progress of work in connection with two programs aimed at improving the living conditions of the displaced populations. It should be noted that there is an increasingly growing need for humanitarian aid for IDPs and sustainable development that will allow addressing the issues related to the problems caused by displacement.

These programs include the SIDPIN and SPADS projects, which are part of international humanitarian aid assistance for IDPs and are supported by the European Union. The goal of the SIDPIN and SPADS projects includes the strengthening of resilience, provision of better access to housing and services, and social inclusion of the displaced individuals and host communities.

The EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot further highlighted that the programs are designed to move beyond ordinary humanitarian aid programs towards investments that will help the displaced population in rebuilding their lives. Indeed, the programs are focused on women, children, persons living with disabilities, and other disadvantaged individuals impacted by conflict and socio-economic issues.

From information provided by the officials from the United Nations, it was clear that the country is home to approximately 3.5 million internally displaced people and is therefore among the worst affected countries by the problems of displacement. It is imperative that no one gets left behind in the push for expanding community-based humanitarian aid programs and opportunities for sustainable recovery.

SIDPIN and SPADS are two community-based humanitarian aid programs which are planned to be launched in 2025 with a budget of 15 million Euros. It is expected that the two programs will assist thousands of households residing in states like Adamawa, Yobe, Kano, Sokoto, and other affected areas. Business Honor observes that effective humanitarian aid programs can strengthen community resilience, support long-term development, and create sustainable pathways for economic and social recovery.
