Tata Power has launched Ghar Ghar Solar in Bihar, targeting rooftop solar adoption across five lakh households over the next three years.
Tata Power Ghar Ghar Solar scheme has been introduced in Bihar for promoting rooftop solar adoption. The company plans to make 5 lakh houses adopt rooftop solar over the next three years.
The program that was introduced by Tata Power and its subsidiary renewable energy company Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL), is meant to create awareness of the use of rooftop solar installations and promote their adoption in Bihar, which currently adopts few such systems compared to some other Indian states.
Praveer Sinha, Tata Power Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, revealed that around 25,000 rooftop solar installations were done in Bihar within the last year. He further added that greater awareness and cooperation between the company and the state government can speed up the process.
Currently, there are three crore houses and 13 crore population in Bihar. As per the estimates by Tata Power, it has a 15% share in solar customers in Bihar, while there is a potential of around 32 GW of rooftop solar adoption.
Bihar Expands Rooftop Solar Subsidies
The Bihar government has cleared extra funding for suitable rooftop solar power plants under the PM Surya Ghar Scheme by the Center.
"The state government has provided an additional subsidy of Rs 10,000 per kW. The combined subsidy from both the centre and state governments would be of the amount of Rs 40,000 per 1 kW plant, Rs 80,000 per 2 kW and Rs 98,000 per plant of 3 kW and above," says Tata Power.
Sanjay Banga, the CEO and Managing Director of TPREL, believes that the higher power tariffs in Bihar could make rooftop solar plants viable; however, the main issue would remain about raising awareness among consumers.
Tata Power has tied up with 18 banks for providing financial assistance to the consumers and plans to work with over 100 partners and retailers for equipment and installation services. Financial Assistance would begin at Rs 999 under Tata Power Solaroof.
Village Solar and Battery Storage
In addition to the primary plan, Tata Power has undertaken another CSR initiative called Mera Gaon, Mera Solar to install solar panels at around 100 households within a single village.
Also, the company has rolled out its Mysine battery storage system in Bihar, which would be helpful to both residential and commercial consumers as it would help to store any extra solar energy and also work as a source of backup when there is a power outage, possibly cutting down the usage of diesel-powered generators.
According to the company, the package covers everything like installing solar energy, battery storage, electric vehicle charging, and maintenance.
