Crew-11 came back early from the ISS due to medical reasons; all are safe and in good condition.
NASA's first medical evacuation from space resulted in the safe return of an international group of astronauts. The Crew-11 mission was cut short by more than a month due to a medical concern on board the International Space Station (ISS). The four astronauts, NASA's Michael Fincke and Zena Cardman, Japan's Kimiya Yui, and Russia's Oleg Platonov, returned to Earth in a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean off San Diego less than 11 hours after leaving the ISS. NASA stated that the issue was not an emergency, yet an early return was the safest choice.
At a following press conference, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman stated that the affected astronaut "is doing fine" and that all four crew members would have normal medical tests before leaving the hospital together. Isaacman did not give any additional information but stated that the attempt was successful. Departing ISS commander Mike Fincke had already informed the public that the astronaut was "stable, safe, and well cared for." Fincke explained that returning to Earth allowed complete medical evaluations, which are not possible in orbit. NASA stated that it would have been riskier to leave the astronaut in space than to temporarily reduce the station's personnel.
This mission included personal accomplishments, where Kimiya Yui marked his 300 days in space by posting astonishing images of earth, including Mount Fuji and beautiful auroras. As humanity presses forward into space exploration, it is significant to note that Crew-11 is a mission that proves a point, it is not a good idea to just explore; it is important to be able to return. Mission Crew-11 is a prime example that future space explorations to lunar or Mars destinations must include a safe return for their astronauts.
