An Indian-born NASA astronaut, Anil Menon has launched his first-ever mission to the International Space Station (ISS), along with the Russian cosmonauts, Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina, in an eight-month mission. The NASA astronaut Anil Menon's ISS mission is significant for international space exploration efforts as the trio has taken off from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome and is set to return in April 2027.
NASA astronaut Anil Menon is now among the vanguard of innovative research efforts in science. As part of the mission, he will carry out experiments that will explore the use of artificial intelligence-assisted medical diagnosis for future space missions to determine the potential role of AI technology in improving astronauts' health on the Moon and Mars.
Yet another key aim is to make advancements in in-space manufacture of semiconductor crystals needed for artificial intelligence, which is still an emerging technology that can make possible next-generation computer chips, biomedical devices, and electronics in general.
Moreover, the mission reflects the increasing international cooperation in the development of technologies useful not only for space exploration but also for life on Earth. The spacecraft had drawings done by children from Indian schools as part of the "First Forever" competition.
The professional life of Menon consists of his stint in Afghanistan, his humanitarian efforts with the Himalayan Rescue Association, leading the human spaceflight medical program at SpaceX, and helping with India's polio vaccination program before he was selected by NASA as an astronaut in 2021.
