Prime Minister Narendra Modi was at the opening of the newest terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport; it is India's first Airport Terminal, which is designed with Nature in mind. The new terminal infrastructure cost approximately ₹4000 crore to build, and is the largest airport terminal in all of the North East Region of India, and will significantly improve the region's ability to connect to other regions as well as grow the economy there. The Prime Minister is visiting Assam for two days and was scheduled to arrive in Guwahati at 3:00 PM. There has been much anticipation for the public to see and explore the new innovative terminal, including its unique design and the many amenities that it will have.
This facility will provide annual passenger capacity of 13.1 million passengers by 2032. It has been constructed to serve as an initial point in establishing improved regional links between Northern India and Southeast Asia and will provide onboard space for 34 air traffic operations each hour at the highest level in the North East region. In addition to the new terminal's enhanced operation through an Advanced Instrument Landing System (ILS), the Guwahati airport features a significant commitment to Regional Natural Heritage of northeast India. The design theme of the India's first nature-themed airport terminal has essentials to celebrate the rich biodiversity of Northeast India, focusing on local plant life, the use of Indigenous Orchids, and the elements of beauty and nature in the landscape of the Brahmaputra River.
With a botanical collection of over two thousand types of plant species, the Guwahati Airport Terminal contains two distinct areas for exhibiting local flora that originates in the Kaziranga National Park and to showcase cultural artifacts from Majuli Island located in the Brahmaputra River. One of the major architectural components of the new terminal building is the bamboo vaulted ceiling, which not only showcases the natural beauty of bamboo but provides a central focal point and serves as the multi-purpose space where cultural activities and events will take place to encourage community participation in this culturally rich area.
