Multiple Aircraft Damaged in Severe Weather Event at Delhi Airport

Delhi Airport's Terminal 2 faces operational disruptions as ground equipment collides with parked aircraft during unexpected severe weather conditions.

  •   Strong winds and heavy rain caused ground support equipment to collide with parked aircraft at Terminal 2 of Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport.

  •   At least three Air India aircraft sustained damage from the incident and have been taken out of service pending repairs.

  •   Ground equipment belonging to Air India Engineering and IndiGo shifted position due to sudden inclement weather, striking the stationary planes.

  •   Air Traffic Control failed to issue advance warning about deteriorating weather conditions to the airport operator or airlines.

  •   Aircraft from multiple airline operators were impacted, with two Air India planes expected to return to service soon while repairs continue.

A sudden and severe weather disruption at Delhi airport has resulted in significant damage to multiple aircraft parked at Terminal 2, forcing airlines to ground at least three Air India planes indefinitely. This incident - which was posted on social media and went viral - shows how inadequately equipped weather warning systems can be; just as important is how at risk are grounded aircraft within extreme weather conditions.

The cause of the Air India aircraft damage was because ground support equipment operating at the airport (from Air India Engineering and IndiGo) were not tethered down properly and subsequently broke loose in strong winds with heavy rain causing them to slide uncontrolled along the tarmac and into stationary planes (aircraft on the ramp of the terminal). In the video footage, you can see ground personnel frantically trying to hold onto the ground support equipment in an attempt to slow down their progress as they skidded to a stop on the tarmac. The operator confirmed that all of the aircraft impacted by this incident are no longer in operation while investigations & repairs are taking place.

The most troubling part about the incident is that there were no warnings issued in a timely manner regarding the impending weather event. ATC did not provide any notification to either the airport management or any airlines of the impending change in weather conditions. Therefore, neither the ground crews on the ramp or airline staff had sufficient time to secure their equipment or implement any preventative measures leading to the significant damage established as a result.

Air India did not offer an official comment regarding the situation; however, sources within the airline confirmed that damage caused by this particular incident affected both their fleet and the fleet of other carriers based at Terminal 2. An airline source stated that three Air India aircraft were damaged to some degree, with two aircraft likely returning soon to operation. One aircraft will require a more extensive repair period before it can resume scheduled service. This incident raises serious concerns about safety procedures and current weather detection systems being utilized at Indira Gandhi International Airport, India’s second busiest airport for air travel and cargo. The airport serves the greater metropolitan area of Delhi and handles thousands of commercial airlines and cargo operations each day. Disruption of operations due to thunderstorms such as this one has significant implications for airlines, their customers and ground handling staff.

Business Honor is of the view that the incident at Delhi Airport represents a critical operational challenge in ground equipment management and weather response protocols.
