Lake restoration resulted in increased water levels and farmland, improving farmers’ incomes while benefiting 30,000 local residents.
Gunduperumbedu Lake in Sriperumbudur, close to Chennai, has been successfully restored by Titan Company in partnership with the National Agro Foundation to help nearby communities and farmers. 1.05 lakh cubic meters of silt had to be eliminated, the bunds were strengthened, 435 meters of toe walls were constructed, and two sluice gates, an extra weir, and a check-weir were installed. To improve access, a new RCC passway bridge was also constructed. The lake's 157-hectare water storage capacity increased by 26 crore liters as a result of these efforts.
Farmers can now grow crops for three to five extra months of the year due to improved water storage. The amount of agricultural land has increased by 50 to 100 acres, while the water level has risen by over 10 feet. Farmers' incomes are expected to rise by 30 to 40 percent as a result of this improvement. About 27,000 people in neighboring villages and 3,000 Gunduperumbedu people will benefit.
Kanchipuram District Collector Kalaiselvi Mohan IAS, Titan's Chief Design Officer Revathi Kant, and Head of Finance Vijay Govindarajan inaugurated the restored lake. After the successful restoration of the Masaorambhu Stream in Coimbatore earlier this year, this is Titan's second environmental project in Tamil Nadu. This highlights how community involvement and water management can restore rural areas in the future. Gunduperumbedu Lake is the model for sustainable agriculture, inspiring projects in India for a beneficial and environmentally friendly future.
