SAP launches Sovereign Cloud in India, ensuring local data storage and compliance with regulations.
German software giant SAP has officially rolled out its Sovereign Cloud capabilities in India, enabling local data storage for users along with compliance with India's data protection regulations. On Friday, September 19, the company announced its new offering as a means to enable government agencies, regulated sectors, and public sector organizations to modernize their infrastructure with cloud and artificial intelligence while maintaining complete control over sensitive data.
The rollout coincides with India's strong effort to position itself as a world leader in data center and AI infrastructure. The Indian government is also wrapping up data protection regulations under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, which called attention to data localization, mandating that companies keep some data in India's boundary – and SAP Sovereign Cloud allows businesses to comply with these rules while taking advantage of the most advanced cloud and AI solutions.
SAP Sovereign Cloud President Martin Merz said the firm's commitment to India's increasing prominence in digital innovation was evident through the platform's ability to enable customers to adopt cloud services while data is kept safe and in-country. Manish Prasad, Managing Director & President, SAP Indian Subcontinent, also said the introduction promotes India's digital journey by facilitating regulated industries to innovate confidently.
SAP Sovereign Cloud is constructed on an open-source, Docker-based, full-stack architecture, providing customer flexibility but ensuring they have technical, operational, and legal control over their data. The service also offers various deployment models, including on-premises installations as well as hyperscaler alternatives through SAP's collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Besides that, SAP has established a Sure Operational Facility within its Bengaluru campus to address India's high national security standards. The launch is also a part of SAP's overall strategy for improving its cloud products and adopting AI to improve business efficiencies, serving more than 4,40,000 customers globally.
