OVHcloud Establishes Defense Unit for Sovereign European Cloud Services

OVHcloud's new defense vertical positions European Cloud Services as strategic alternative to US providers amid NATO tensions.

OVHcloud is launching a defense-centric cloud services vertical to support the sovereignty of Europe. On Thursday, OVHcloud, the cloud provider headquartered in France, announced its plans to create a special division for defense applications of cloud computing and AI specifically designed for defense ministries and armies in Europe. This is an important move toward achieving technological independence from non-European vendors.

The announcement coincided with OVHcloud’s H1 2026 earnings report presentation. The new unit will operate within OVHcloud’s existing SecNumCloud product line, which is a high security certification on cloud providers that meet strict European security requirements established by France’s ANSSI (National Agency for Information Systems Security). With all data stored in Europe and accessible only by companies located in Europe, the initiative is a response to the growing concern over military data sovereignty during the course of increased geopolitical tension between nations.

The defense vertical will provide support in areas such as AI-enhanced command systems, coordination of drone operations, interoperability between military organizations and NATO Forces, and increased independence from the use of non-European technologies. The timing of this announcement is also a reflection of the overall anxiety felt by Europe due to the increased pressure from the United States toward NATO and the risks posed by territorial sovereignty and therefore a tremendous need exists for the establishment of independent cloud infrastructure to support Europe’s independent military operations.

OVHcloud CEO Octave Klaba emphasized the strategic imperative: "Defense now depends on cloud, data, and AI. Europe can no longer afford to depend on non-European technologies—it must have high-performance, sovereign alternatives." The company revealed it has been recruiting defense and military sector experts to accelerate development of cloud and AI solutions tailored for critical environments, building on years of existing relationships with defense organizations.

Alongside this announcement, OVHcloud disclosed plans to invest €50 million ($58.9 million) in building dedicated inventory of memory components and disks for exclusive 2027 use, driven by escalating global memory costs. The company projects €25 million ($29.4 million) in annual savings from this stockpiling strategy.

Business Honor is of the view that OVHcloud's dedicated defense unit represents a strategic pivot toward European technological sovereignty and military cloud independence.
