Microsoft offers devices urgent updates to fix the reset and recovery issues in Windows 11 and 10.
Urgent out-of-band (OOB) updates have been offered by Microsoft to fix a major issue causing system reset and recovery tools to fail after the updates were installed. Previous versions of Windows 11 and Windows 10 are affected by the issues. System reset and recovery stopped for users who installed updates KB5063875 (for Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2), KB5063709 (for Windows 10 22H2 and LTSC 2021), or KB5063877 (for Windows 10 LTSC 2019). To restore Windows while keeping programs, data, or settings, these involve the "Reset this PC" option and the "Fix issues using Windows Update" tool.
The RemoteWipe configuration service provider's (CSP's) remote reset operates failed, resulting in problems for IT administrators as well. Management of devices in business contexts was thrown off, especially in cases when remote support is necessary. A day after the issue was discovered, Microsoft responded by issuing new OOB updates. KB5066189, KB5066188, and KB5066187 are urgent fixes for Windows 11 (22H2 and 23H2), Windows 10 (22H2 and LTSC 2021), and Windows 10 (LTSC 2019). It can be handled directly with the Microsoft catalog or by applying Windows Update.
Microsoft suggests installing these OOB files in place of the security updates for those who have not installed them yet. The patch is not needed if a device isn't affected by the reset issue. Additionally, another bug that led to update failure when using the Windows Update Standalone Installer (WUSA) from a shared network was resolved by Microsoft with a Known Issue Rollback (KIR). With WSUS, another update also fixed Windows 11 24H2 update issues. With the goal to help avoid future issues of this nature, Microsoft aims to improve system performance in Windows 12 with AI-powered technologies that automatically detect and fix issues.
