ESC’s new plan targets waste reduction, improved recycling and community education for sustainability.
The Eurobodalla Shire Council (ESC) is taking measures to improve recycling and waste management through its newly proposed Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy for 2025 to 2035. The draft proposal is currently available for public input and is aimed at minimizing waste while increasing recycling efforts within the community.
Nathan Ladmore, the waste services manager at ESC has mentioned that the strategy's goal is to decrease waste by promoting reuse, repair and resource recovery. The council aims to prevent waste generation initially and make sure that more materials are either recycled or reused. ESC means to develop new facilities, address plastic pollution and curb illegal dumping. With the region's popu
lation on the rise they seek to make sure that waste services are prepared to support future demands.
The council serves nearly 26,000 households through three bins designated for general waste, recycling, and garden organics. Additionally, they operate two landfills located at Surf Beach and Brou where residents can dispose of both waste and recyclable materials. In the 2023-24 period, the shire managed to recycle 66% of the waste that was not directed to landfill. To decrease the amount of soft plastics in landfills, ESC cooperates with APR Plastics in Victoria to convert these plastics into reusable oil with this trial program commencing in late 2024 and set to continue.
The strategy outlines ambitious objectives for 2030, which include a 60% reduction in litter, tripling the rate of plastic recycling and halving the organic waste that is sent to landfills. It also proposes the implementation of food organics and garden organics (FOGO) collections adjusting landfill fees to incentivize recycling and potentially using electric vehicles for waste collection.
Mayor Mathew Hatcher underscored that the plan includes more than simply overseeing bins and trucks. It raises a community that arranges environmental awareness through education and encourages a circular economy with reduced waste and increased local employment. The council encourages residents to examine the draft policy and provide their input by August 29. The completed plan will be published later this year.
