Textile recycling nonprofit RicRack turns discarded clothing into educational resources and community opportunities, promoting sustainable fashion practices, sewing skills, and local circular economy solutions in New Orleans.
The company, called RicRack, is making waves in the field of recycling through their innovative use of textile waste and turning these wastes into educational aids, resale items, and resources that help communities go green. Based out of New Orleans, the non-profit focuses on not only on eliminating waste but also on training citizens how to sew and recycle their clothes.
Formed by Alison Parker, the non-profit accepts clothing donations twice a month. Of the clothing donations, about 40% goes towards being sold in their shop. Another chunk of the donations serves as teaching material in their sewing courses. However, the rest of the donations are recycled in other ways through secondary textile products.
Community Education and Sustainable Fashion Skills
Textile recycling projects such as RicRack indicate growing attention to local circular economy systems as well as sustainable fashion lessons. Among the projects offered by RicRack, one can find sewing circles for kids, sewing bootcamps for adults, and classes devoted to creative sewing, embroidery, denim felting, and fabric reuse.

As stated by Parker, this project is based on the idea that clothes' mending and reuse must become a basic life skill in light of the rapid production of fashion waste in the era of fast fashion.
Funding Challenges and Local Sustainability Efforts
Despite growing support for sustainability initiatives, RicRack continues facing financial pressures as smaller organizations compete for limited grants and nonprofit funding. Declining support from local film productions, once a major source of textile donations, has also affected supply channels.
However, community partnerships and events such as RicRack’s annual Designer Textile Reuse Challenge continue helping the organization promote sustainable design and raise awareness about waste reduction practices.
