Secure, password-free Facebook login rolls out globally on iOS and Android devices
Meta has started offering passkey authentication for Facebook users on both iOS and Android, a significant step towards the end of passwords. The feature will become available globally in the coming weeks. Passkeys are a password-free, secure way of logging in. They use standards called FIDO2 and WebAuthn that the majority of modern smartphones support. The FIDO Alliance and World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) created these standards to provide a more secure way of signing in without passwords. Apple, Google, and Microsoft have already supported passkeys along with other technology companies.
With Meta's passkey system, sensitive data like fingerprints or face scans is encrypted and only stored locally on user-owned devices. This puts Meta out of reach with this data, even during a security breach. This is part of Meta's other recent security changes, such as biometric login capabilities for Messenger for iOS. Other users who do not have compatible devices or would like to use passwords can still use the old ways of signing in. Passkeys are an additional option, not a replacement, providing users with adaptable options. This rollout supports global efforts towards reducing the use of passwords, especially in high smartphone usage areas like the Middle East and the UAE. The UAE has itself been at the forefront of digital identity, recently implementing a biometric-based digital ID system.
Passkeys simplify and secure login by not requiring users to recall difficult-to-remember passwords. Because authentication information remains on the device and is not transmitted across the internet, attacks are less likely. This matters because password attacks have been on the rise lately, says Google.
Meta's passkey login is a significant step toward more secure, convenient online safety for Facebook users worldwide.
