Global travel faces major disruptions due to Heathrow power failure and volcanic eruption in Indonesia.
World travel was severely disrupted by two main events: a power failure at London's Heathrow Airport and the eruption of a volcano in Indonesia.
Heathrow Airport, which is among the busiest in the world, was compelled to suspend operations during Friday morning due to a major power failure. The power failure was brought about by a blaze at an electrical substation in the vicinity, which disrupted the airport's capacity to run flights. FlightRadar said that 120 flights across the continent had been diverted, including those of Qantas. The QF1 service from Singapore to London was diverted to Paris rather than Heathrow, for instance. Operations were said to be shut down at the airport for the remainder of Friday, and passengers were told not to travel to Heathrow at all costs until further notice. The electricity blackout was anticipated to result in significant delays, with a minimum of 1,351 flights affected overall, including possible cancellations as planes were out of position.
Apart from Heathrow chaos, flights in Indonesia were also halted due to the eruption of Mount Lewotobi in the province of East Nusa Tenggara. Ash filled the sky after the eruption, and flights were delayed or canceled at Bali's I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport. Different flights between and from Australia, including Jetstar flights from Singapore, Brisbane, and Melbourne, were hit. Some of the flights were cancelled, however, with Jetstar stating that normal operations resumed at 1:30 pm when things returned to normal.
Both incidents highlight the vulnerability of global air transport to sudden disruptions, causing immense inconvenience to passengers worldwide.
