Longwell cautions that Trump’s actions could lead to lawlessness and erode democracy.
On 17th March 2025, Sarah Longwell, owner of the conservative publication The Bulwark, declared that the Trump administration's seeming disregard for a federal judge's injunction was putting American democracy in danger.
The Trump administration ignored a federal judge's order on 15th March 2025 to return planes carrying deportees bound for Central America. To establish if the administration simply disregarded the injunction, the judge scheduled a hearing for Monday afternoon.
Longwell shared with Dana Bash that many people, particularly those worried about a potential second term for Trump, were concerned he might eventually position himself to disregard or ignore court orders. Longwell stated that Trump is moving quickly to dismantle the government or push through his deportation policies, demonstrating a clear disregard for the law.
She added that judges, through injunctions or temporary restraining orders, have been trying to slow him down. However, she warned that there might come a point when Trump simply decides to start ignoring these court orders altogether.
Longwell argued that Trump's approach is to target the least sympathetic individuals for deportation, believing that Americans will be less concerned about his defiance of the law in these cases.
Vice President JD Vance had wrote on Sunday that there were "violent criminals and rapists" in the U.S. who were deported by President Trump. He suggested that many people would be unconcerned about the deportation of such individuals, thinking of them as bad people.
However, Longwell pointed out that while it's unclear whether these individuals are actually gang members, the administration seems to be relying on their claims without evidence. She warned that the administration is now trying to bypass the law on technicalities, and once a president starts ignoring court rulings, it leads to a lawless state.
The 200 Venezuelans have been accused who were deported to El Salvador on Saturday of not receiving due process from the Trump administration.
