Beijing Sees Surge in International Arrivals Due Visa-Free Policies

Beijing experiences historic rise in international travel, fueled by expanded visa-free policies.

Beijing has experienced a record-breaking boom in global tourism in 2025, with nearly 940,000 foreign nationals coming to the city by March, according to official statistics from the Beijing General Station of Exit and Entry Frontier Inspection. This boom is part of a general upswing in cross-border travel into China, with the city's overall international arrivals crossing 4 million, a 23% increase over the corresponding period last year.

One of the major drivers of this growth is China's liberalization of visa-free policies. The introduction and implementation of the 240-hour visa-free transit policy has been a huge success, and it has made it possible for tourists from carefully chosen countries to stay in China for ten days without a visa. This has made it possible for more than 236,000 visitors to come into Beijing alone in the course of 2025 and has totally eased the process of travel for tourists and business users both.

The increase in cross-border entry is also the result of China's ongoing commitment to simplifying visa procedures and promoting global mobility. Beijing's visa-free policy now covers 38 nations, and the 240-hour transit policy covers passengers from 54 countries. The policies are intended to enhance the city's reputation as a cosmopolitan travel hub and promote cultural, economic, and tourism exchanges between China and the world.

With the continued success of these policies, Beijing is well positioned to experience further growth in inbound tourism. As China's international tourist sector recovers, the city is likely to gain from more foreign tourists, helping overall revitalize China's position on the global tourist map. This influx of tourists reflects the increased status of Beijing as a top destination for global tourists.
