Former Secret Service agent and podcaster Dan Bongino nominated deputy director under Kash Patel.
U.S. President, Donald Trump has appointed podcaster and political commentator Dan Bongino as the new deputy director of the FBI. Bongino, whose political beliefs are classically strong conservative and pro-Trump, was appointed to serve under newly confirmed FBI Director Kash Patel.
Trump acknowledged Bongino in a tweet, where he called him "a man of tremendous love and devotion for our Country," but also emphasized his role in restoring fairness, justice, law, and order to the FBI. Bongino is 50 years old and has been an experienced law enforcement officer with background in the New York Police Department and the Secret Service.
But Bongino's nomination has been contentious, particularly given his lack of experience at the FBI. Traditionally, the deputy director is a career agent with extensive years of service in domestic and foreign operations. Critics say the new FBI leadership of Patel and Bongino lacks the customary credentials normally demanded of senior agency officials.
Bongino, one of Trump's closest friends, has become popular through his podcast “The Dan Bongino Show”, which discusses politics on a regular basis and has a massive following on social media platforms such as Facebook. He has been famous for disseminating misinformation regarding the 2020 presidential election and other conspiracy theories. In a recent podcast, Bongino defended Patel, whom he thinks is the ideal candidate to "make the FBI great again" by eliminating what he perceives as "woke culture."
As for Bongino, he is leaving his podcast behind for his new position, but his brash political opinion and confrontational style continue to attract both positive and negative reaction. His promotion, which comes without Senate confirmation, is another significant changeover in the bureau's leadership at a time that the agency is under intense media scrutiny.
