Trump nominates Sean Duffy, ex-Congressman and Fox host, to head U.S. Department of Transportation
Donald Trump, the president-elect, has nominated former Congressman and Fox Business host Sean Duffy to head the U.S. Department of Transportation. Duffy is a strong supporter of Donald Trump and a former reality TV star who makes it the second Fox News commentator to be appointed to the incoming administration of the growing trend that Trump chooses close allies for key cabinet roles.
On Truth Social, Trump hailed Duffy as a "tremendous and well-liked public servant" who is "admired across the aisle." The president-elect pointed out Duffy's experience on Capitol Hill and his personal commitment to improving the nation's infrastructure. If confirmed, Duffy will oversee a department with a $110 billion annual budget, anything from aviation safety to rail and transit and automotive policy.
"Sean knows how important it is for families to be able to travel safely and with peace of mind," Trump wrote, highlighting Duffy's family life with his wife, Fox News personality Rachel Campos-Duffy, and their nine children. "He will use his experience in Congress to help maintain and rebuild our nation's infrastructure and usher in The Golden Age of Travel, focusing on safety, efficiency, and innovation."
Duffy was a Republican state representative from Wisconsin from 2011 to 2019, after a career in prosecution and reality TV: he appeared on The Real World: Boston and Road Rules: All Stars. He will now oversee a department charged with safety, sustainability, and efficiency in America's travel network, a workforce of nearly 55,000.
Duffy's nomination will be coming to the Department of Transportation at a time when it is grappling with persistent safety issues on the part of Boeing and possible labor disruptions. In addition, the new administration will inherit rules on vehicle emissions that Trump seeks to unwind for much of what President Biden had created.
