To improve energy production and stabilize the electricity supply, the state government launches innovative hydroelectric projects.
Two large Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) have been approved by the Himachal Pradesh government as part of a deliberate effort to improve the state's energy infrastructure. Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd. (HPPCL) has been awarded the 270 MW Thana Plaun Pump Storage Project in Mandi district and the 1630 MW Renukaji Pump Storage Project in Sirmaur district, according to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.
Pumped storage projects, especially those that use renewable energy sources like solar and wind power, are known for their dependability in balancing the power supply. Through the use of turbines and water storage and release, these projects will make use of the state's mountainous terrain to reduce power shortages during periods of high demand.
In order to pump water to dams at higher elevations, the PSP system uses inexpensive electricity during off-peak hours. The water that has been stored is released when demand increases, reversing potential energy into electrical energy. The Thana Plaun Hydro Electric Project will generate 191 MW and have separate turbines for the PSP system, whereas the Renukaji Hydro Power Project has a 40 MW capacity.
The state wants to prioritize the development of these projects under the Swaran Jayanti Policy, 2021, and is accepting suggestions twice a year. This program complements Himachal Pradesh's pledge to increase revenue from hydro projects, establishing the state as a major participant in India’s renewable energy sector.
