Bangalore Flyover News: Rs 436 crore IOC Junction replacement project signals major traffic transformation for East commuters
|
Bangalore Flyover News: In East Bengaluru, government officials have planned to remove the old flyover that is located at the junction of the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). The old flyover will be replaced with a new elevated rotary flyover; an integral part of a large infrastructure project. The new flyover, planned for ₹436 crores by Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Ltd (B-SMILE), will ease the decades-long heavy traffic at one of the busiest junctions as it relates to commuters and their access to Sir Visvesvaraya Terminal (SMVT). The current IOC Junction flyover was built in February 2001 by the railway authorities.
What disruptions East Bengaluru commuters could face during construction phases
The demolition and construction will significantly affect East Bengaluru's already overstressed road network. The Dodda Banaswadi Rd, Byappanahalli Rd, and Kammanahalli Main Rd (the main arterial routes) will probably be severely congested due to traffic diversion during the various construction phases. Commuters who use these corridors to get to work every day will have extended travel times and increased frustration as the project is expected to take an extended time to complete according to officials.
How authorities plan to manage traffic amid multiple infrastructure projects
To address these challenges, the authorities will develop a comprehensive traffic management plan including local municipal authorities and traffic enforcement agencies. The plan will include alternative routes, temporary traffic control measures, and perhaps jointly scheduling.
The IOC Junction is part of a larger infrastructure overhaul being developed throughout Bengaluru. The demolition of the Jayadeva flyover for the new metro interchange is being done concurrently with proposal development for the removal of the Delmia flyover via a double-decker corridor; these major infrastructure projects being completed at the same time will present a unique challenge for traffic management.
What lies ahead as Bengaluru navigates long-term traffic solutions
City planners and civil engineers have stated that short-term disruption is an unavoidable outcome of the current project; however, they believe the positive impact of the elevated rotary will far exceed any inconveniences. The elevated rotary should allow for improved traffic flow through the heavily utilized intersection, ultimately creating lasting relief for commuters and assisting in the overall effort to improve access and connectivity to the Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal. While there will be many months of construction-related disruptions due to this project, this is an investment in the ongoing evolution of technology to improve Bengaluru.
Business Honor is of the view that IOC Junction flyover demolition represents a strategic infrastructure modernization reshaping East Bangalore's connectivity capabilities.
