Lumen’s upgraded network infrastructure, featuring a multi-conduit system, positions it as a key player in delivering the backbone for AI-driven economies
Lumen Technologies has partnered with Corning Incorporated in a landmark agreement to bolster its fiber-optic infrastructure, more than doubling its U.S. intercity fiber miles. This move aims to support the escalating demands of cloud data centers driven by the rapid growth of generative AI and high-bandwidth applications.
The agreement, Lumen’s largest cable purchase to date, secures 10% of Corning’s global fiber capacity for the next two years. With Microsoft having invested in Lumen to accommodate rising data demands, this will allow Lumen to cater to the network demands of significant data centers. As AI continues to revolutionize the tech landscape, data centers require up to ten times more fiber connections to manage massive data volumes. Lumen’s upgraded network infrastructure, featuring a multi-conduit system, positions it as a key player in delivering the backbone for AI-driven economies. Lumen CEO Kate Johnson emphasized that the company is positioning itself as the network provider for AI, stating that the partnership with Corning will provide Lumen with the advanced fiber technology needed to meet customer demands and maintain its competitive edge.
This collaboration marks the first deployment of Corning’s new gen-AI fiber and cable system, capable of fitting two to four times more fiber into existing conduits. This advancement will be crucial in interconnecting AI-enabled data centers efficiently. Lumen is also enhancing its digital platform, offering cloud-like network services through its Private Connectivity Fabric, further solidifying its role in the AI economy.
