Hyderabad Cybercrime Police have registered a case against Meta India CEO Arun Srinivas along with various Facebook and Instagram accounts over the alleged circulation of morphed and AI-generated content about PM Modi during recent CJP (Cockroach Janata Party) protests by students. The incident has brought into focus the issues of social media content regulation and AI-generated misinformation, as there is increasing pressure on both authorities and tech firms to curb manipulated digital content.
The complaints were filed by S. Aravind Reddy, a businessman, and T. Saikiran Goud, a BJP activist from Telangana. Both complainants have mentioned that during browsing on Instagram, they found various altered videos and images of the Prime Minister, which were obscene and defamatory and misleading in nature, while comments accompanying those posts were abusive in nature, encouraging people to share them further. The case has also renewed attention on digital platform accountability in India and the responsibilities of social media companies.
Reports also indicated that digital manipulation and artificial intelligence software likely created the content. It could lead to the spread of false information, public disturbance, defamation of public personalities, disruption of public order, and even hostility between different segments of society. The authorities are currently investigating whether the content violates any existing laws related to communication over the Internet. These posts were found during the nationwide CJP protests, where some other posts and comments on the Internet have also been reported as offensive in nature.
This incident comes soon after another one where Meta faced backlash from the government after a post from the Prime Minister's account was blocked on Facebook temporarily. In response to these allegations, Meta assured the government that there will be better safety measures in place for public accounts. As per reports, any future moderation of content posted by such public figures would have to go through more internal scrutiny from Meta.
In an unrelated incident, the Delhi Police have asked various social media companies to remove various derogatory posts against the Prime Minister that had been posted by individuals participating in the protests organized at Jantar Mantar and the "Sansad Chalo" rally on July 20. Notices have also been issued to multiple social media accounts as investigations continue.
