An intense 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit Japan's southern Kumamoto prefecture Tuesday, causing extensive destruction in the region and prompting an urgent response from both governmental authorities and companies. The shaking caused a power outage for roughly 40,000 homes, caused the breakdown of important infrastructure and resulted in more than 50 injured individuals.

Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi addressed the nation from her office in Tokyo, announcing that assessments regarding casualties and structural damages are currently being conducted. "There have been power outages and fire incidents in some areas, as well as road and bridge damages and building collapses," said Takaichi. One hospital treated more than 50 injured individuals, and other casualties included people who were riding high-speed trains when the earthquake hit.

Infrastructure suffered from considerable damage because of the earthquake. Various buildings were heavily damaged, including Aeon shopping mall that exploded, as well as buildings burning or collapsing. Important roads such as highways developed large cracks, and a cargo train was derailed close to the epicenter of the earthquake.

The transport systems in the region faced complete disruption. There were disruptions in the mobile phone services offered by telecommunications companies such as KDDI and Docomo because of power outages and disruptions in the telecommunication lines. Precautionary evacuations have been put in place in major technology corporations based in the region including evacuation of employees of the world’s largest contract chipmaker, TSMC, Sony, and Fujifilm.

The disaster management team evacuated over 150,000 people to the designated locations. Predictions of aftershocks, which would continue for a week ahead of time, were made by people at the Japan Meteorological Agency. This prediction came with the possibility of landslides occurring in areas that had shaken. The prediction of the risk of tsunami has been withdrawn after the alert of 1-meter tsunami has been issued initially.

This earthquake occurred in the same location where there had been a big earthquake ten years back, in which 275 people lost their lives while over 2,700 people sustained injuries. Historical damage was done to Kumamoto Castle, a popular tourist site in the country, where parts of stalls in the castle crumbled due to Tuesday's tremors. Japan Nuclear Regulatory Authority revealed no abnormalities in the operations of nuclear power plants in the country. Japan faces regular seismic activity where there is a tremor of sorts almost every five minutes in the country.
