X Suspends Cockroach Janata Party Account Following Legal Demand in India

Cockroach Janata Party's rapid social media rise sparks platform action; replacement account gains traction immediately.

  •   Satirical Indian political outfit's X account suspended following legal demand in India jurisdiction

  •   CJP rapidly gained 13.5 million Instagram followers, overtaking BJP within four days of formation

  •   Founder Abhijeet Dipke launched replacement account "Cockroach is Back" with 21,000 followers in one hour

  •   Account emerged as response to Chief Justice's controversial "cockroaches" and "parasites" remarks about unemployed youth

  •   Platform claims compliance with local laws; founder alleges simultaneous hacking attempts on Instagram account

X withheld the account of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), a satirical Indian political party that rapidly gained a large following on social media. CJP's account has been withheld because X claims a legal request from an appropriate Indian entity. The @CJP_2029 user account was notified by X that it has been "withheld in IN in response to a legal request". According to Abhijeet Dipke the founding president of CJP, the restriction of their account was anticipated, and he has proof of the account's restriction posted on social media.

The account of this new political parody party was suspended after record numbers of followers were gained on many social media platforms in such a short period. After 4 days of existence, CJP had gained 13.5 million followers on Instagram, outpacing the BJP's total followers on Instagram. As such a milestone was reached, CJP took the opportunity to post a sarcastic picture to show that CJP is not an actual party but it is "the World's Biggest Party." This clearly demonstrates that social media was used for satire. The temporary setback in relation to the original X account was soon rectified, with the emergence of a new account entitled "Cockroach is Back" with the tagline "Cockroaches don't die!" that had more than 21,000 followers less than an hour after launch. Clearly, there is continued interest in the Cockroach Movement despite restrictions imposed by the X platform.

X has claimed its actions were compliant with all standard protocols for content moderation according to jurisdiction. X states that they withhold content in response to a valid and correctly scoped request from an authorized entity and implement withholdings "in situations where it may be necessary to withhold access to a specific type of content in a specific jurisdiction." X also emphasized that any action they take withhold access to a type of content will only apply to the jurisdiction from which a valid legal demand has been received, or to where local law prohibits access to that type of content.

The Cockroach Janata Party originated in response to the inflammatory comments made by Chief Justice Surya Kant comparing unemployed youth to "cockroaches" and "parasites". The Cockroach Janata Party was then established by Dipke, a political communications strategist who has previously managed social media and election campaigns for the Aam Aadmi Party, using the Chief Justice's inflammatory language as the inspiration to build a satirical political movement based on it. The outfit's stated membership criteria included being "unemployed, lazy, chronically online, and able to rant professionally," characteristics that resonated with a broad demographic across India's social media platforms.

Business Honor is of the view that Cockroach Janata Party's suspension represents platform compliance with Indian legal demands and jurisdiction-specific content restrictions.
