Tamil Nadu CM Vijay has unveiled a major welfare package, promising three free LPG cylinders every year for eligible households and expanding free government bus travel for women and transgender persons.
The LPG scheme, called Annapoorani Super 6, is set to begin from Pongal 2027. Women heads of eligible households with annual incomes of up to ₹2.5 lakh will receive the benefit, covering more than 1.30 crore families. The estimated annual cost is around ₹4,000 crore.
But can household relief come without a heavier fiscal burden?
The government says the LPG support is designed to ease pressure from rising fuel prices and global supply disruptions. Beneficiaries will receive the money directly in their bank accounts after purchasing and receiving the cylinder, based on official billing.
The second major announcement targets public transport.
From October 2, women will be able to travel free on Express, Limited Stop Service and Deluxe government buses in metropolitan and urban areas. The benefit will also extend to ordinary-fare buses on mofussil and hilly routes for inter-district travel. Transgender persons will also qualify.
The expanded Vetri Payanam scheme is expected to cost the state around ₹6,000 crore annually. Unlike the LPG programme, the transport benefit will have no income ceiling and no limit on journeys.
Together, the two schemes could place roughly ₹10,000 crore a year in additional recurring welfare commitments, based on the government's stated estimates.
The announcements come alongside Vijay's decision to drop the proposed Parandur greenfield airport project, adding another major policy shift to the government's agenda.
