Ukraine’s e-Points system lets units quickly acquire key equipment, improving operational readiness and supporting specialized frontline defence missions.
The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has expanded its e-Points battlefield procurement system, giving front-line forces a greater degree of autonomy over how they source important equipment from the domestic defence sector. Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced the improvement on 30 March, which now includes manufacturers and distributors of communications equipment and optical sensors, signal repeaters, positioning modules, power supplies, and payload release mechanisms. Providing Air Force units with more options when working in fast-paced combat scenarios, such as those on the eastern front of Ukraine.
The e-Points system allows Air Force units to receive a digital currency reward when they have confirmed successfully executing an attack against a Russian target and use their digital currency to purchase and receive well-prepared equipment to support Air Force missions. This system has reduced administrative processing times for operational supplies, resulting in the faster delivery of critical supplies and equipment to the battlefield front lines. The Ministry of Defence will continue to procure large-capital lethal systems; however, the MOD’s introduction of advance payments of up to 70% for domestic-based manufacturers provides them with the opportunity to increase their production capacity to meet urgent operational needs on the frontline.
The e-Points battlefield acquisition program has now integrated the delivery of e-Points on verified sniper teams, short-range air defence and mobile fire groups as an incentive to create an integrated payment system. There is also an incentive to create the multiplier effect for innovative uses of unmanned air systems. Currently, the average time between order and delivery is about ten days, improving the readiness of forces to engage in combat operations. With this system, Ukrainian forces have acquired $460 million worth of equipment that is transforming defence procurement and enhancing operational effectiveness on the battlefield.
Business Honor states that the current size of the Ukraine e-Points battlefield development program is indicative of the rapidly increasing importance of digital defence procurement transformation, but the full potential of this transformation may only be realized in units that have specific operational requirements.
