Honeywell Aero Expands European Defense Technologies

Honeywell Aero is expanding ITAR-free defense technologies as European governments seek greater supply chain independence and stronger regional defense capabilities.

  • Honeywell Aero is expanding ITAR-free defense technologies for Europe

  • The company has assigned 1,000 engineers to non-ITAR product development

  • A new defense product is expected at the Farnborough Airshow

  • Rising European defense spending is increasing demand for export-independent systems

The ITAR-exempted defense technology development by Honeywell Aero is gaining momentum due to the growth of demand among Europeans for defense systems that do not fall under the jurisdiction of the United States export regulations. The development is driven by the growing investments in European defense industry expansion and the demand for ITAR-free defense technology.

Honeywell's defense business is intensively developing its engineering capabilities in Europe, with about 1,000 engineers working in Poland and the Czech Republic on developing products that do not incorporate the use of U.S. restricted technologies. It will facilitate the use of local defense solutions by European customers.

As reported by Reuters, Honeywell Aero is going to present a new ITAR-exempt defense product at the upcoming Farnborough International Airshow this month. The move will boost the international portfolio of the company amid the rising defense spending of NATO countries and the growing security threats.

"The emphasis is now on developing technologies that will be more aligned with the requirements of Europe, but at the same time developing similar non-ITAR capabilities for our partners in the Asia-Pacific, including Japan and South Korea," explained Jim Currier, CEO of Honeywell Aerospace.

The international defense business has been gaining increasing significance for Honeywell Aerospace, with sales overseas representing around 30% of its revenues from its defense business last year, versus approximately 18% in 2020. Honeywell is also taking advantage of navigation technology gained with the purchase of Italian Civitanavi to expand its non-ITAR offerings.

Industry sources explain that the need for export control-free equipment has grown sharply because European governments want more independence in their defense purchasing and supply chains. Suppliers in North America have started developing technologies that can be incorporated in allied defense programs without being subjected to U.S. export control regulations. Business Honor believes Honeywell Aero's strategy reflects the growing importance of regional defense manufacturing, supply chain resilience, and export-independent military technologies worldwide.
