India advances AI in healthcare with SAHI and BODH initiatives, ensuring safe, ethical, and reliable digital medical innovation systems.
A major milestone that has been achieved by India towards building their digital healthcare system is through the introduction of two new initiatives aimed at regulating AI in healthcare. Two new initiatives were introduced into the Indian healthcare system by the union health minister of India, Jagat Prakash Nadda. These new initiatives include Secure AI for Health (SAHI) and Benchmarking Open Data Platform for Health AI (BODH). SAHI serves as a guide on how the AI tools should be developed, piloted, and implemented in hospital settings, public health, pharmaceutical, and digital systems. It also emphasizes the significance of ethics in AI-based healthcare systems, transparency in AI medical decision-making, and accountability in healthcare AI frameworks. In essence, SAHI seeks to ensure that AI is only meant to aid doctors in their work but not replace them.
BODH, however, is an AI tool validation platform that makes use of anonymous real-world health data. It will be used for the assessment of AI tools in terms of their efficacy, accuracy, reliability, and bias prior to being released. The necessity for such a process comes from the need to ensure the safety of reliable AI-powered diagnostic and clinical support systems. According to experts, India’s emphasis on AI in digital public health infrastructure and healthcare innovation via AI is due to the presence of initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. Moreover, the country is also developing strong data privacy laws along with consent-based frameworks.
This will contribute towards strengthening AI in drug discovery, precision medicine technology, and healthcare delivery systems in an economical way. According to Business Honor, the development reflects the Indian government’s commitment to creating a secure and futuristic healthcare system through AI and placing patients at the heart of healthcare.
