Qatar launches a Saudi land transit route using digital customs and a TIR system to maintain cargo flows and strengthen Middle East supply chains.
The Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry has introduced a new land transit route through Saudi Arabia for the smooth flow of goods into Qatar during the current transport challenges in the region. This move is part of a wider logistics contingency plan to sustain the continuity of supply chains in the Middle East. This plan was established in partnership with the Qatar General Authority of Customs to enable the smooth flow of commercial cargo into Qatar via the Saudi land border.
According to officials, the plan will sustain the continuity of trade flows and supply chains into Qatar by ensuring that commercial cargo continues to flow into the country. The plan will also provide special customs procedures to enable the smooth processing of commercial cargo for logistics operators. Freight operators will enjoy special customs procedures and fast-track lanes for freight operators, which helps in reducing the time spent at border checkpoints. The process is facilitated by Qatar’s digital customs platform, ‘Al-Nadeeb Customs Platform,’ which allows exporters, importers, and freight operators to submit and process documents electronically.
The platform is vital during digital customs clearance and the facilitation of paperless trade in the supply chains of the GCC countries. Businesses can prepare cargo documents electronically rather than using physical forms. This allows for faster supply chain visibility and speed in the overall logistics operation. The transit corridor is also connected to the international freight network called the TIR Convention. This enables the movement of sealed cargo to pass through international borders with minimal customs procedures involved.
Qatar’s inclusion in the TIR Convention was approved in 2019, with the Qatar Chamber acting as the national guarantor for the issuance of TIR carnet. The TIR was linked to the Al-Nadeeb platform in May 2025 to facilitate the issuance of electronic TIR transit documentation for the international freight corridors. This move will enhance the strong Middle East logistics network to secure cargo routes from transport disruptions in the region.
