India Reaches 3 Million Rooftop Solar Homes under PM Surya Ghar

Government accelerates clean energy transition with ₹750 billion investments, targeting 10 million households by 2027 nationwide.

Rooftop Solar Installations under PM Surya Ghar’s free electricity scheme reach 3 million, according to the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, marking a major leap forward for residential clean energy in India.

The numbers are significant, and the 3 million rooftop solar installation beneficiaries represent an important first step toward the program’s goal of achieving rooftop solar systems in 10 million homes by 2027. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described the program as an important milestone in the clean energy transition and a sign of the rapid migration to renewable energy in India.

The PM Surya Ghar scheme was introduced in January 2024 with the goal of using rooftop solar to increase India’s energy independence and reduce the cost of electricity for middle-class and economically weaker households. This initiative is an important part of the government’s strategy to achieve energy security, generate more capacity from renewable energy sources, and reduce the country’s reliance on non-renewable traditional power sources.

The government will invest ₹750 billion (USD 8.14 billion) to build a domestically owned renewable energy infrastructure and make rooftop solar more affordable for eligible customers through subsidies on installations.

According to Mercom India Research’s Q4 and Annual 2025 India Rooftop Solar Market information, India’s rooftop solar capacity increased by over 123 percent, from 3.2 GW in 2024 to 7.1 GW in 2025. Rooftop solar made up over 19% of all solar installations for the year. Residential customers accounted for approximately 76% of all newly installed rooftop solar systems in 2025. The government segment accounted for only 1% of new installations, the commercial sector accounted for 5%, and the industrial sector accounted for 18%.

The PM Surya Ghar program is anticipated to oversee installations until 2027, according to Priya Sanjay, Managing Director of Mercom India. Ms. Sanjay pointed out that as the program’s 2027 target year approaches, expectations for the rooftop solar industry’s growth are rising.
