Adani Green Energy Deploys World's Largest Battery Storage System

Battery storage system deployment marks India's leap toward grid-stable renewable energy infrastructure globally.

Adani Green Energy commissions 3.37 GWh battery storage at Khavda, Gujarat facility

Deployment ranks largest single-location system outside China globally

Project completed in record 10 months of on-site construction

Battery system can power nearly one million homes for entire day

Company plans to scale storage capacity to 50 GWh within five years

Adani Green Energy Ltd, the biggest renewable energy company in India, has achieved a significant milestone by completing 3.37 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) of Battery Storage System (BESS) at their Khavda Project located in Gujarat. This project represents the largest single-site storage of batteries for power generation outside of China, and ranks as one of the fastest utility-scale battery storage deployments executed throughout the world. The latest phase of the project was commissioned with the addition of 1.37 GWh to the overall project during March 2026. This allows the facility’s total levels of operational battery storage to reach 3.37 GWh. The entire project took only 10 months from start to finish, a feat that illustrates unbelievable speed and efficiency in an industry where similar deployment projects typically take much longer to complete.

The Khavda site, where the BESS will ultimately reside, is the same area where Adani Green Energy is building their 30-gigawatt renewable energy facility by 2029, nine of which are currently operational today. The combined capacity for generating large amounts of solar and wind energy, in addition to equivalent amounts of energy storage infrastructure, creates a new way of providing renewable energy at an unprecedented scale and volume to the electrical grid over time. The BESS has a considerable number of real-world applications.

The 3.37 GWh battery energy storage system can fully energize approximately one million homes for a full day, bearing peak electricity demands equivalent to the cities of Indore or Chandigarh, or potentially matching the entire power needs of the state of Goa. The system could power over 12 million LED bulbs for ten hours straight, giving a sense of its immense store of energy. Firmly rooted in the sophistication of modern battery storage, the integrative technology involves advanced energy management systems in partnership with lithium-ion battery technologies, aiming for optimal efficiency, reliability, and grid responsiveness. The arrangement allows the system to address a key challenge affecting renewable energy, that being bringing the renewable energy sources into the grid: variability based on time of day, weather condition, seasonal fluctuations, and geographical location. According to Sagar Adani, Executive Director of Adani Green Energy, "It will be deployment by and large of this nature in large-scale energy storage that will define this phase of clean energy transition in India. As renewable energy capacity grows quickly, storage infrastructure will become critical to delivering reliable 24x7 clean energy."

The company has ambitious expansion plans for its battery storage portfolio. Adani Green Energy plans to add more than 10 GWh of battery storage capacity during the fiscal year 2027 and targets scaling this to 50 GWh within five years. This aggressive growth trajectory positions the company at the forefront of India's energy storage revolution. The Khavda deployment demonstrates how renewable power can evolve from intermittent generation into dependable, dispatchable energy infrastructure.

Business Honor is of the view that Adani Green Energy's 3.37 GWh battery storage deployment represents a transformative shift in India's renewable energy infrastructure and grid stability capabilities.
