Navitaire Software Outage Disrupts Airline Operations at Major Airports

The Navitaire system outage delayed flights at IGIA and other airports, highlighting airlines’ reliance on centralized software and backup needs.

Disruption to airline flights at major airports in India, including Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), was experienced on Thursday morning due to Navitaire reservation system outage that affected airlines operating in many parts of India, Asia Pacific and Europe. The failure of the Navitaire centralized software platform highlighted the danger of increasingly relying on centralized systems to handle check-in and departure processing for airlines.

Airlines including IndiGo, Air India Express, Akasa Air and SpiceJet all encountered delays in processing passengers at airport locations between 6:45 AM and 7:28 AM and intermittently again between 8:10 and 8:25 AM; due to the Navitaire airline software crash, there was no access to airport kiosks, boarding gates and baggage systems resulting in long lines at airport check-in as staff were forced to revert to manual processing.

Navitaire, a subsidiary of travel technology firm Amadeus, provides airlines around the world with airline passenger service system solutions for low-cost carriers and hybrid service providers. The outage raises concerns regarding airlines' reliance on software systems and underscores the need for aviation IT systems to have redundancy built into their structure so that if an incident like this one occurs with any significant frequency there will be no interruption in airline operations. According to technology analysts, this incident may lead to greater investment in resilient airline reservation systems and place additional emphasis upon the use of alternative/cloud-based backup systems. Airline reliance on digital systems is increasing, resulting in additional focus on how to maintain continuous operation of the critical systems that are used by global aviation stakeholders (e.g., Navitaire).
