House Homeland Security chairman and GOP senators seek answers from ICE and other agencies following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.
A growing number of Republican lawmakers are advocating for a special investigation into federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota in regard to a fatal shooting incident involving a 37-year-old man named Alex Pretti, who was killed by agents in Minneapolis. The case has become the focus of the Alex Pretti federal shooting investigation, drawing attention from lawmakers across party lines.
Representative Andrew Garbarino of New York is the Republican chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. Garbarino has requested to hear from top officials in Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services about the situation. Garbarino stated the reason for this request is to inquire about the circumstances surrounding the incident and the operational aspects involved, marking a formal House Homeland Security Committee ICE inquiry.
There are other Republican members of Congress who are also seeking information, including Representative Michael McCaul of Texas and Senators Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Susan Collins of Maine, and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. The responses from these lawmakers reflect growing bipartisan interest in reviewing Republican immigration enforcement policies in Minnesota and federal use-of-force procedures.
Pretti’s family issued a statement disputing the official account of what transpired. Federal authorities, including Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, reported that Pretti was shot after allegedly waving a gun. However, family members and witnesses stated that Pretti was holding a mobile phone and was not armed. According to sworn witness statements, Pretti approached federal agents after seeing them push another individual to the ground. Publicly available video footage appeared to show agents deploying chemical spray before restraining Pretti.
The Associated Press reported that calls for an investigation are coming amid growing concerns from lawmakers and state officials. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether a formal independent investigation will proceed. The Department of Homeland Security stated the matter remains under review.
