The contract enhances U.S. South Korea defense cooperation, modernizing cockpit technology for advanced multirole combat capabilities.
Boeing has partnered with Hanwha Systems in South Korea to provide the U.S. Air Force with state of the art cockpit display technology for their brand new F-15EX Eagle II fighter aircraft as well as the South Korean F-15K Slam Eagle fighter. This contract represents the new beginning of an agreement that was made between Boeing and the South Korean Defense Acquisition Program Administration back in November 2024 to work together on mutual projects. The new Eagle Large-Area Displays will allow for the innovative integration of all the cockpit screen data onto one large touchscreen to give pilots faster access to important information. The technology will be customized from the multifunction display designed for the KF-21 fighter aircraft.
The F-15EX aircraft are equipped with state of the art technology for enhanced situational awareness and improved connectivity (e.g., the F-15EX's advanced Integrated Combat Management System). Additionally, the F-15EX features increased RCS (Radar Cross Section) performance compared to earlier F-15s and an increase in payload, operating range, speed and capabilities in the areas of fighter air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. The F-15EX can conduct a wide range of air-to-air operations and support ground forces using a variety of weapons. The F-15EX aircraft were created in direct response to the need for advanced air-to-air and ground forces supporting advanced weapons system platforms.
As part of this strategy, the USAF is also moving forward with plans to base at least 36 new F-15EX aircraft on Okinawa in place of the traditional F-15C/D that are currently stationed at Kadena AFB. The new F-15EX fighters are intended to provide a significant capability boost to the Air Force's air to air and ground forces. The USAF has stated that the first new F-15EX should be delivered between March and June of 2025.
