U.S. Industrial Wastewater Treatment Industry Prepares for Large-Scale 2026 Expansion

Aging plants and stricter regulations push U.S. industrial wastewater upgrades with new technologies and funding supporting 2026 construction.

The US industrial wastewater treatment industry is preparing for a large-scale expansion in 2026 as existing plants age and stricter regulations require more urgent upgrading. Manufacturers, cities, and industrial parks are advancing delayed projects from planning into construction, which promises to be one of the busiest periods for industrial wastewater treatment in recent years.  These projects vary in scope from upgrading existing industrial wastewater treatment plants for oil refinery wastewater treatment to installing a new zero liquid discharge system in food and beverage plants. Utilities and industries alike are upgrading equipment for more stringent industrial wastewater treatment regulation compliance and managing extreme weather events that happen more frequently.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, there is a $630 billion gap in clean water infrastructure spending over the next two decades. Now, industrial wastewater treatment plants are focusing on more innovative industrial wastewater treatment systems for reclamation and reuse, including membrane bioreactor systems and real-time digital monitoring platforms for water quality and efficiency.  According to industry experts, the need for industrial wastewater treatment equipment suppliers in nutrient removal technologies as well as energy-efficient technologies will increase in the coming years. In addition, engineering, procurement, and construction firms are likely to face capacity constraints. “We’re moving hundreds of stalled projects into construction,” said an executive. “This is the largest synchronized investment cycle in decades.”

With billions in funding available through Clean Water State Revolving Funds as well as WIFIA loan, industrial wastewater treatment industry stakeholders are racing to secure funding partners as well as top-notch sustainable treatment technologies. It’s likely that companies that act sooner rather than later in securing partners as well as technologies will have a significant advantage in terms of securing top-notch partners as well as favorable financing. This represents a significant start to a new era in industrial wastewater treatment in the United States.
