Mr. Dominic Eyiah emphasizes improved logistics as crucial for economic growth amid global supply chain challenges.
Mr. Dominic Eyiah, head of NAHEOG, calls for a change in Africa's logistics systems to include resilience and safety as priority attributes in addition to speed. During the ninth Graduation Ceremony for Forklift and Mobile Crane Operators in Accra, Eyiah stated that speed alone could not provide sustainable economic growth because of the disruptions in global supply chains, the impacts of climate change, and advancing demand for trade. He argued that improving logistical systems means focusing on how to sustain the equipment according to the world's requirements and training operators to identify and capture risks in advance of responding reactively. Eyiah noted, "To think of safety in terms of productivity and not as merely a cost is to treat logistics as an unseen contributor to economic development."
A ceremony was held by RMU and the program’s sponsors to recognize graduates who completed training as either Mobile Crane Operators (MCO) or Forklift Operators (FO); a total of two graduating classes accounted for 27 MCOs (27 per cent) and 16 FOs (16 per cent). In total, more than 400 MCOs and FOs have successfully completed the programme since its inception. Mr. Dominic Eyiah described logistics as the "hidden backbone" of economic systems. Eyiah said inefficient logistics would lead to higher product prices say by 30 to 50 per cent; however, by enhancing efficiencies, a business may also see its customer's product price decrease and its customer's ability to increase productivity and/or provide customer confidence without having to add additional capital.
Eyiah stated that conversations around technology and automation should include knowledgeable personnel, who play an important role in the effective operation of the supply chain. Eyiah said, "An operator properly trained can greatly reduce potential losses because speed without resiliency leads to dangerous supply chains". By receiving this graduate certification, this group of operators demonstrates a movement towards excellent logistics standards within Africa.
