Google now offers managed servers for Maps, BigQuery, and other services, simplifying AI agent connections for developers.
Google has announced that it is now utilizing the Model Context Protocol (MCP) for its cloud offerings. All fully managed servers supporting MCP are available now through Google Maps, BigQuery, Compute Engine, and Kubernetes Engine. Server availability will be made in phases and in the form of a public preview. MCP is an open protocol developed by Anthropic and provides a standardized interface between AI agents and their data sources. MCP is often referred to as the "USB-C for AI," as it provides a universal connection layer. In the past developers had to build custom connections to each of their services, which made it difficult to debug and manage their systems.
The various MCP servers are incorporated into Google's existing security and governance framework. Access to MCP servers is controlled through Google Cloud IAM and every activity performed via the MCP servers is logged in the Google Cloud Audit Log. Google Cloud Model Armor offers protection from Agentic threats such as indirect prompt injection or data exfiltration attempts. Organizations that use MCP are allowed to create and manage policies at the Organization level, and they are allowed to choose which services are enabled or disabled on an individual basis. Google is actively working to add significant new features, as well.
According to their announcement, Google is planning to expand the extent to which MCP integrates into additional cloud services in the coming months. Through Apigee, Google is also expanding the ability for organizations to integrate MCP into their proprietary APIs and third party APIs. With Cloud API Registry and Apigee API Hub Developers can publish and manage their APIs as MCP Tools, and therefore enable AI Agents to access internal systems and data sources. Anthropic, the company that originally created the spec for MCP is collaborating closely with Google to develop MCP further in the context of their new Agentic AI Foundation.
