UAE’s energy facility under construction will have a capacity of 1,000 megawatts, creating 10,000 jobs by 2027.
The $ 6 Billion facility that Masdar and the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) will provide 1 gigawatt of renewable energy on demand around the clock to tackle the issue of solar intermittency. The facility contains a 5.2 gigawatt solar photovoltaic (PV), paired with a 19 gigawatt-hour battery energy storage system, the largest and most advanced in the world. Ahmed Ali Alshamsi, the chief executive of EWEC stated the project will further position the UAE as an innovator in sustainable development and environmental sustainability.
The initiative is expected to create over 10,000 jobs in construction and operations and potentially achieve an estimated annual carbon dioxide (CO₂) reduction of approximately 5.7 million tons. Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar indicated that the facility is an important milestone in the global transition to renewable energy. "This world-first project, the largest and most ambitious in Masdar’s history, provides a blueprint for the world, to show that renewable energy can be dispatched instantly. By overcoming the challenge of intermittency, we can provide dependable and sustainable power on demand to meet the fast-growing demand from advancements in AI and further technologies."
This facility will utilize artificial intelligence for real-time forecasting, intelligent dispatch, and predictive analytics setting a new global standard for clean dispatchable energy. The project will support the UAE's national strategic objective of achieving 100GW clean energy capacity by 2030. The facility will be operational by 2027.
