New app helps Mexicans check beach water quality, promoting public health and environmental awareness. Playas Mx is a brand-new smartphone app that Mexico has released to assist users in assessing the water quality of its beaches nationwide. The app was created by the Ministry of Environment (SEMARNAT), the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS) and the Ministry of Health.
Playas Mx provides current water quality data for 289 beaches in 76 well-known tourist locations across the 17 coastal states of Mexico. To advise tourists about the safety of swimming and other recreational activities on the beaches, this information will be updated each holiday season. During the introduction, the Environment Minister Alicia Bárcena said that the app will protect public health and support the right to receive environmental information.
It provides individuals with clear information about which beaches are safe and clean to visit, she explained. Bárcena also talked about a broader project called the National Campaign for the Cleaning and Conservation of Beaches and Coasts (2025–2030). The initiative's primary objectives is reducing plastic waste and restoring coastal habitats such as mangroves.
The government is also developing a National Environmental Restoration Program. The app shows how government agencies are using technology to protect people and the environment said Federal Commissioner Armida Zúñiga. It encourages informed choices by simplifying the understanding and accessibility of beach water quality. In the summer of 2025, almost 2,300 water samples from 393 sites were analyzed. Approximately 94% of beaches were deemed safe enough for recreational use.
These results are now shown in the app. Officials also showed that everyone has a duty to preserve the environment and asked the public to help keep the beach clean. This software is part of Mexico's effort to combine technology, health and environmental preservation on one platform.
