ISAC technology merges sensing and communication, allowing smarter networks with broad industry applications.
As the wireless industry looks ahead to 6G, 5G Americas which is a leading voice for 5G and beyond in the Americas has released a white paper titled Transforming Industries with Integrated Sensing and Communication. The report shows how Combined Sensing and Communication (ISAC) will modernize mobile networks by allowing them to instantaneously communicate and sense their surroundings in unlocking new use cases and revenue opportunities.
Viet Nguyen who is the president of 5G Americas claims that ISAC converts wireless networks into intelligent systems that can track the real world by fusing traditional communication with radar sensing. By using common radio frequencies for both sensing and communication, ISAC networks can track motion, identify objects and develop spatial awareness even when there are no direct device connections.
Some of the report's main conclusions include the dual functionality of ISAC systems, their extensive range of applications in sectors like public safety, healthcare, transportation, and industrial automation, as well as new business models like "Sensing as a Service". Technical issues including waveform design, interference control and the requirement for AI driven edge calculating are also covered in the white paper.
The Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), which stresses cooperation between manufacturers, academic institutions and regulators is implementing standardization initiatives beginning with 5G-Advanced and 6G releases. By mixing sensing into communication infrastructure, ISAC redefines cellular networks and offers financial and technological benefits that promote intelligent and automated systems according to Paul Tse, Director of Strategy and Technology at Ericsson.
ISAC is essential for context aware services and digital twin technologies in 6G, according to Amitava Ghosh, a Nokia Fellow and major contributor. This allows carriers to provide creative, data-driven solutions that improve safety, automation and mobility. With its ability to combine sensing and communication, ISAC is poised to be a key technology for the upcoming generation of smart infrastructure allowing connected industries.
