TeamLease report reveals extensive regulatory compliance demands in India’s rapidly growing renewable energy sector.
TeamLease Regtech, an established regulatory technology business in India, has released an in-depth report titled "Decoding Compliance Management for the Renewable Energy Sector." The paper examines India's deep regulatory framework for renewable energy firms and highlights the importance of having a compliance culture in light of the sector's rapid expansion.
With an installed capacity of 107.94 GW, India ranked third internationally by April 2025 showing its growing influence in the solar energy sector. Between April 2023 and February 2024 the country generated 75.57 billion units of solar power. With a 2023 valuation of $10.4 billion the solar market is projected to nearly quadruple by 2030 by resulting in an annual growth rate of 13.4%.
The important regulatory burden on companies operating in this sector is highlighted in the research. For instance 799 special regulatory requirements must be met by a separate solar project in Maharashtra with a corporate office in Haryana. Of them 153 are from state and local administrations, while 646 are from federal authorities. Each year 2,735 compliance tasks result from these regulations. With 244 different criteria labor regulations are the most extensive resulting in 1,071 duties per year. These include significant laws such as the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act and the Employees' Provident Fund Act.
The proper combination of people procedures and technology is necessary for effective compliance management, according to Rishi Agrawal, CEO of TeamLease Regtech. Adopting digital technologies keeping compliance checklists current and educating leadership based compliance cultures are all recommended by the report for renewable energy companies. The expansion of the renewable energy industry across several states will increase the complexity of compliance. In order to guarantee sustained growth in India's clean energy journey the research advocates for proactive and technologically allowed compliance practices.
