UK and India aim for deeper collaboration in science, technology, and innovation post-FTA.
India is emerging as a global leader in innovation, the UK is looking to strengthen its science and technology partnership with the South Asian nation. Lord Patrick Vallance, Britain's Minister of State for Science, Research, and Innovation, emphasized this at the Future Frontiers Forum of the India Global Forum held at the Science Museum in London.
Addressing the session "Unlocking UK-India Collaboration for a New Era of Innovation", Vallance emphasized improvement in mobility of high-skilled professionals under the Global Talent Visa and called for stronger academic and scientific collaboration.
"There is already a close connection between India and the UK, and I believe it's increasing," Vallance said. "But government-to-government relations aren't sufficient. We need scientist-to-scientist links. India is emerging as a strong force in science and technology, and we must utilize it."
Vallance also announced that the UK government's new Industrial Strategy will be published shortly, which spells out the major areas of focus for partnership with India in areas such as healthcare, clean growth, and digital technologies.
Piyush Goyal, India's minister of commerce and industry, also spoke at the function, highlighting the benefits of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the UK and India. He said, "An FTA shows the world that our countries value each other and want to advance together in innovation, science, and technology."
In a dedicated "Pitchers and Punters" section, the forum showcased Indian startups to global investors. Among the prominent attendees were Electric Miles, Steamology Motion Ltd., Lina Energy, and Zypp Electric. Octopus Energy also presented Zypp Electric with the Clean Tech Award.
The forum discussed how growing UK-Indian partnerships are propelling global innovation and sustainability in the future.
