The Smart Cities Mission boosts air quality, safety, mobility, education, and overall urban sustainability.
Launched in 2015 with an investment of ₹1.5 lakh crore, India's ambitious Smart Cities Mission has drastically changed the nation's metropolitan landscapes. According to recent evaluations, over a six-year period ending in 2024, cities participating in this program saw a 23% improvement in air quality when compared to non-smart cities.
Measures like the installation of actual pollution monitoring systems, the growth of green spaces and the introduction of electric buses are credited with this improvement. The mission's influence goes beyond its positive effects on the environment. According to a State Bank of India report, crime rates have decreased by 27% in smart cities, highlighting the value of integrated command and control centers, better street lighting and integrated surveillance systems.
For example, after putting these measures into place, Nagpur reported a 14% drop in total crime rates. Additionally, the mission has improved cleanliness and urban mobility. With an importance on the creation of smart roadways, digital parking systems and effective water supply networks, more than 7,500 projects have been finished.
These initiatives have not only improved the quality of life for individuals but also contributed to the development of more reasonable and sustainable urban landscapes. There has also been a more beneficial shift in schooling. The installation of 9,433 smart classrooms in 2,398 government institutions has resulted in a 22% rise in school enrollment in 19 cities. This development demonstrates the mission's dedication to promoting accessible and inclusive education. Technology and infrastructural development have not only solved today's urban problems but also laid the groundwork for future sustainability and adaptability.
