India upgrades CGHS Health Management Information System with new features for improved service delivery and efficiency.
India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) is re-launching the retired Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) Health Management Information System (HMIS) after a close to two-decade stint. The aged system, initiated in 2005, could no longer cope with IT standards of today, cybersecurity frameworks, or changing user requirements.
The new, enhanced HMIS, prepared by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, will facilitate better access to the service and provide improved delivery to CGHS beneficiaries. The new system has a set of new features that are innovative, including a unique PAN-based identifier for every beneficiary to prevent duplicate records and facilitate easy verification by users. With automation of contribution verification by the integration with Bharat Kosh, the new HMIS will streamline the procedure for obtaining a CGHS card, which will be faster and more efficient.
Besides these administrative enhancements, the new system also computerizes a number of services. CGHS beneficiaries can now transfer their cards or alter their dependent category and status without any hassle. The system will also provide SMS and email intimation at every step of the application process, ensuring transparency and real-time tracking.
In addition to the new HMIS, the CGHS mobile application has also been overhauled, with a better user interface. The app now enables beneficiaries to view digital cards, verify the real-time status of applications, book appointments, and access e-referrals. It also combines communications with the help desk to further enhance the user experience.
The upgrade of CGHS HMIS is India's overall effort to digitalize its health system. The recent initiatives in Delhi and across India are paving the way for a well-organized and connected health network, with a view to integrating stand-alone systems for improved access to health information.
