Recycling glass waste, Disney World creates eco-friendly trails and supports its sustainability goals.
Stepping into sustainability, Disney World has begun recycling glass bottles and converting them into products that can be used by its theme parks. One of its contributions towards waste reduction and going green is that the initiative is only a start. Rather than landfilling the glass bottles, Disney now grinds them and produces a sandy material to be utilized in different ways in the theme park.
The broken glass is also being recycled into stronger, safer surfaces to utilize on trails and roads across the park. For instance, broken glass is utilized to enhance horseback riding trails, road gravel material, and even greenhouse floor coverings. The initiative not only conserves waste but also conserves resources since Disney no longer needs to utilize new material for these purposes.
The recycling of glass in this manner is one of the strategies of Disney World towards meeting its promise of sustainability and minimizing its footprint on the environment. Disney World is committed to achieving zero waste to landfill and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and, in pursuit of this goal, is adopting various means of waste reduction and energy savings across its operations.
By recycling waste glass into a useful product, Disney World is also contributing to reducing the world's need for new raw materials, conserving energy consumption, and lowering carbon footprints. The action has been hailed by environmentalists as grounbreaking because it not only benefits the local environment but also the quest for world sustainability.
Disney's glass recycling initiative is only one instance of the ways in which large corporations can begin to make the switch towards more environmentally friendly practices. Through rethinking waste and thinking creatively about new uses for materials, Disney World is issuing a loud call to action to other businesses to do the same.
