The Nepal China Flood 2026 has become a major Himalayan disaster, with at least 359 people reported dead in Nepal and more than 1,000 people missing across Nepal and China’s Tibet region. China has separately reported three deaths in Tibet, while rescue teams search debris-filled valleys, villages and border areas.

The catastrophe followed the collapse of glacial rock and ice that sent a powerful debris flow into mountain river systems. The resultant wave caused destruction to the houses, roads, bridges, power lines, and one of the most important routes linking Kathmandu to Lhasa.

How much worse could the final toll become?

The number of missing people from Nepal stands at hundreds, with the majority being foreigners who were visiting or on pilgrimage in the area. From China’s side, state television channel CCTV reported that 558 people are missing in Gyirong County with 260 being foreigners.

The disaster brought out the weakness of border facilities in Gyirong Border Mudslide. The verified videos captured the surges of water, mud and debris that washed away the border and caused floods downstream in the Trishuli river that destroyed communities.

There is another problem facing the officials due to the formation of a new dammed lake upstream. There are fears from Chinese officials that the growing body of water will eventually burst, causing another threat during rescue efforts. Heavy rains could compound the problem.
