BMW’s Vision Driving Experience concept reveals self-illuminating paint and futuristic design for next-gen EVs.
BMW unveiled its future vision through its radical Vision Driving Experience (VDX) concept at Auto Shanghai, demonstrating a dramatic leap in the design and technology of electric vehicles (EVs). The dramatic concept boasts a revolutionary self-illuminating paint finish, making it stand out as a possible game-changer in the automotive design world.
The VDX is a quad-motor electric car that features light-sensitive pigments, which are charged during the day, enabling the color of the car to change from a pale whitish hue to a bright neon yellow when it gets dark. This striking effect is complemented by a "magic film" on the back half of the vehicle, which produces an interesting gradient that changes from yellow to orange and finally to pink under UV light.
In another display of innovation, the VDX features centerlock wheels with eight LEDs per spoke that change color based on the behavior of the vehicle. Green is indicated when accelerating, orange when braking, and blue when using regenerative braking, and it provides a visual indication of the vehicle's dynamic performance.
The classic kidney grille, a signature feature of BMW's design language, also receives an illuminated border, foreshadowing the design direction for subsequent Neue Klasse models. The VDX proves BMW's commitment to the blend of forward-looking technology with striking design, justifying the point that the automobile future is quite unnormal.
BMW's dabble with high-tech paint isn't new for the automaker; the Vantablack X6 with E Ink-technological-shape-shifting iX Flow and the former example are among tests in past endeavors. Although manufacturing applications will stay years from now, BMW's VDX concept shows future-oriented ambition potential in concept and electric vehicles.
With the VDX, BMW leads the auto industry in car innovation, opening up the future of sustainable, design-driven EVs to the world.
