Stellantis Dongfeng Voyah partnership signals major strategic shift in European electric vehicle distribution and manufacturing capabilities.
|
The multinational automotive company Stellantis (Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Jeep and Vauxhall) will introduce the premium brand Stellantis Dongfeng Voyah from the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Dongfeng to showrooms. They have signed a 'Heads of Agreement' to form a non-binding joint venture for the sale, distribution, manufacture, purchase and engineering of Voyah vehicles throughout Europe, an extension of their 34-year relationship. Stellantis will own 51% of the joint venture and Dongfeng will own 49%, consistent with Stellantis's existing joint venture with Chinese EVs manufacturer Leapmotor for international markets.
What models will Voyah bring to Europe
Voyah has already introduced its products to several European countries, including Norway, and has a presence in the Middle East. They have three primary models: the Voyah Free (an all-electric SUV), the Passion (Sedan) and the Dream (MPV). Although the announcement does not specifically mention whether Voyah will be available in the UK, it is reasonable to assume that the UK will be a key focus market, as demand in the UK for hybrid and electric-powered vehicles is very high. The starting price for the Voyah Courage (a fully electric crossover with 292 miles of range) is less than £30,000 in Norway, making it a competitive option in the accessible premium segment of the market.
The Voyah Free, the flagship SUV from the Chinese manufacturer Voyah, can be classified as a premium electric SUV, with an estimated range of up to 311 miles, all-wheel drive capability, and an acceleration time from zero to 62 mph of 4.4 seconds. The Free is available in Norway priced just under £50,000, making it a direct competitor to Stellantis’s own DS No.7 model.
How will Stellantis help Voyah expand across Europe
Stellantis’ extensive European sales network, after-sales support systems, and back-end capabilities for parts distribution and financing are expected to provide substantial benefit to the joint venture’s ability to penetrate the European market faster than if the company had been attempting to enter the market independently. Manufacturing is a major component of the joint venture’s strategy; Stellantis and Dongfeng are working together to produce hundreds of thousands of Voyah vehicles in the Rennes plant in France, ensuring compliance with European regulatory standards as well as addressing “made in Europe” requirements that will increasingly impact buying behavior and supply chain reliability.
What are Stellantis and Dongfeng saying about the partnership
According to Stellantis C.P.O Antonio Filosa, this partnership represents an entirely new level of collaboration across the globe for global partners via commercial cooperation internationally. The intent is to offer both consumers in China more options than ever before, at lower prices; additionally, it provides consumers access to some of China’s extensive resource pool of new energy vehicle eco-systems due to Stellantis’ global network. The announcement is aligned with both companies' overall Corporate Strategy objectives as well.
Recently, Stellantis and Dongfeng have announced an agreement to manufacture next-generation Peugeot and Jeep brand vehicles at their Joint Venture located in Wuhan, China beginning in 2027, while providing for the ability to sell these products domestically within China as well as internationally via export. Dongfeng’s Chairman Qing Yang also commented upon how this venture by the parties is in support of China's national strategic initiatives while at the same time meeting the respective parties’ shareholders corporate development requirements for the future.
What does this mean for the future of Europe’s EV market
This development demonstrates confidence in the long-term viability of EU’s EV Market and represents the ongoing evolution of the automotive industry with traditional OEM’s collaborating with innovative companies from China to compete successfully within the global electrification marketplace.
Business Honor is of the view that Stellantis's joint venture with Dongfeng for Voyah represents a strategic repositioning in European electric vehicle market penetration and manufacturing integration.
